The Main Event - Tour - Crotched Mtn - New Hampshire

One of the only reasons why I still live in New England is the winters. As most people despise them and hibernate for the winter, to myself and others it turns into one big playground. I will say for the record, I am not a professional snowboarder, I do however love to get with some friends and charge the mountain every now and again with the headphones blaring.

Anyways, the boys over at Burton and Red Bull have put together a series of competitions called the Main Event. This was their first stop this past weekend and it's fair to say, even with the visibility not so perfect, the conditions were amazing. I will throw and update on this series as I learn about it, cause I am a fan of some friendly competition. You can check out the full write-up and images at TRANSWORLD

Check out the rest of the dates that the tour is hitting the area........ don't sleep!

Event Series:

Wachusett Mtn, MA – Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Ski Sundown, CT – Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Stowe Mtn, VT – Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Sugarloaf Mtn, ME – Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Loon Mtn, NH – The Finals – Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Resident Advisor Poll: Top 100 DJs of 2008

DJing: It's an artform like few others, and one that too often goes underrecognized. DJs can transform a good party into a great one, and turn a previously solid night into a disaster. Sometimes they've even been rumoured to save lives.

But while RA has contributors from around the world that have picked our site's top jocks in the past, we decided to try something a bit different this year. We opened our top DJs poll to you—the RA users—to see who you felt was consistently rocking dance floors in 2008. So we set up a page, locked out all of the fake e-mail spamming street teamers and let you at it.

The results were overwhelming, with thousands of votes pouring in for DJs of nearly every conceivable genre. House, techno, trance, dubstep, electro, disco, indie and more: It's a list that has Tiesto rubbing shoulders with Mathias Kaden, Boys Noize with Theo Parrish and Damian Lazarus sandwiched right between Aeroplane and Armin Van Buuren. Ladies and gentlemen, your Top 100 DJs of 2008.

Some very interested and talented results came out in the end. Check out the whole list here at RESIDENT ADVISOR

Shepard Fairey x's TIME Magazine x's Obama!!!

Amazing news! Shepard Fairey's posters of Barack Obama became the icon of the Presidential campaign, so TIME asked the artist to design the cover for its Person of the Year issue. You can watch a really great interview with Shepard Fairey about this cover SHEPARD FAIREY INTERVIEW HERE

I have been a follower of the Obey Propaganda for some time now. Come February when SF does his show at Boston's ICA, I could be the happiest man in Boston.

[Event Review] Crystal Method and Myself at Underbar

Thursday - November 20th 2008 @ Underbar Boston

So many nights without sleep, endless car drives and even working so hard that I eventually came down with pneumonia in the middle of Denver while still doing back to back gigs and then immediately retiring to the ER, you will never hear me complain about what I do. I have had some of the most amazing opportunities and have performed with some of the most amazing artists on the planet. Artists that I respect, follow and appreciate their work and get to meet on a professional level as a "co-worker" if you will.

Last Thursday night was no different. I took the stage and warmed up a small yet completely sold out intimate setting of 400 people at Underbar Boston for The Crystal Method. A couple years back I was asked to open for them and a week before the gig I was notified that they had an opening act on tour with them (which was Evil Nine and I was just as excited to have them playing in Boston than I was for me getting opening duties).

So on this night, it was time to welcome the boys to Boston properly. The room was filled and ready to rock by 11pm. After keeping my cool for the first hour, I knew by 11pm I could step up the energy to the next level. Of course that is what I did, keeping in mind that a RESPECTFUL OPENING DJ maintains a proper tempo before leaving a guest the stage.

So 12am came around and Scott and Ken of CM took over the controls. Immediately they came in banging with the hard hitting sounds of The Crystal Method. The place just went off. They did an amazing job the whole 2 hours and kept the room moving. I do hope the next time, we can have them in doing a Live PA.

Closing statement........

I will be working in the studio for the winter, let's see what's next? Have a good holiday and I will keep writing.

Mix Set: Rennie Pilgrem Celebrates 15 years of TCR!

Without Rennie Pilgrem's TCR there would be no Nu Skool Breaks, no Friction with Adam Freeland & Tayo, no HUM with Meat Katie, no Breaksday at The Glade Festival, no Stir. With over 400 titles from some of the best electronic producers we thought we'd celebrate with a series of free TCR mixes from Rennie, various classics remixed and parties around the globe.

To celebrate the fact that we are 15 years old some of our most important tracks are being remixed and re-released alongside the originals. 'Morpheus' by Koma & Bones. 'Black Widow' by Rennie Pilgrem & Uberzone. 'Purple Monkey' by JDS and more will be unleashed over the rest of the year. This is great timing as breaks are currently gracing some of the biggest club releases of the moment, with crowds loving the fusion of 4/4 and breaks…bring it on!

We will also be throwing a series of parties around the globe which will include TCR Artists. Following on from massive sales (in excess of 20,000) of his album 'Skin' via the unique texting service Rennie Pilgrem has done a free TCR Monster Mix which will be given to party-goers as a special memento of the label. Day 3 - The Bombing Continues!

I turned the corner at 9am on Wednesday morning and what do I see? What I am guessing is about 10-feet x 10-feet of OBEY! I drove towards it with my jaw dropped and just gazed upon the biggest installation I have seen in person. I CAN NOT WAIT UNTIL FEBRUARY! Yesterday was a busy day and I happen to catch the following throughout Boston. My co-pilot on the expedition, was non other than Chris "Cot-Tec" "NoMo" Ward. I have been notified of some others that I missed, so I will do a follow up later today. Enjoy!

Obey - Shepard Fairey - Early Boston Visit?

On my travels through Harvard Square this afternoon I strolled upon this lovely wall pasted up in front of a store renovation. Rumor has it, it's suppose to be some sort of bar but that is not yet confirmed. The man himself Shepard Fairey is scheduled for an exhibition starting this February 6th at the ICA Boston. This piece certainly got me very excited for February!

ATTN DJ's: I would like to know your thoughts....

So I came up like most DJ's my age in the mid-nineties, using turntables and vinyl. I started collecting vinyl before I even had turntables so by the time I had my Technics turntables, I would already have a great start to practice at home. Well it's now 13 years later and I have gone almost all digital using CDJ's (CD Turntables). I made that jump a few years ago after attending Burning Man in the Nevada Desert (terrible place to bring vinyl).

Regardless, I am always playing out tech-funk, techno and breaks but during the winter months I end up playing a lot of Snowboard events and other electic gigs that I play different styles of music.

So I am debating going from CDJ's to using Laptop at my gigs. However, I have not yet decided if I should make this jump and if I do, should I go with Seratto? Traktor Scratch? Or just stay with CDJ's? As far as comfort level goes, I am very comfortable using CDJ's. I was very comfortable using vinyl. I can adapt pretty easily so that's not much of an issue.

I would like to know from as many people as possible the following:

- Are you using Vinyl, CDJ's, Laptop?

- Why do you prefer the route that you're going?

- If you are using laptop, what program are you using and what specs of laptop?

- What problems have you experienced playing out live?

- Do you have any additional thoughts or advice that you could share with me about this topic?

Marriage, Jamaica, Friends and Family

My best friend Jade and I finally got married last weekend. For this part of our life, we decided that we wanted to leave the country and do it in a tropical paradise. This paradise that I speak of was Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We decided Ocho Rios simply off my best man Todd telling us how amazing it was and beautiful it would be. What he didn't mention, was his words while describing it, would come nowhere near how breathtaking it really would be. Words and pictures will never explain how amazing the time we spent in Jamaica was. We offer you some pictures to give you an idea. Thank you to all those who were able to attend our wedding. We will also be having a wedding reception at the family restaurant Thai Excursion, next Saturday (October 4th) for those who are interested. Details here

Finally to my love, Mrs Jade Giacoppo. You are my best friend, the love of my world and now my beautiful wife. Here is to a lifetime and more of loving you, my wife. xoxoxo

You can view hundreds of photos from our wedding and time in Jamaica by clicking here PHOTOS

Dunny Series 5 - Out and Killing it!

A few years ago, my best mate turned me onto Dunny's. I am now a die hard collector of these damn things. I have two rooms of my apartment filled with these artist series collector items. I wonder if it's that addiction from my vinyl record collecting that makes me seek out and find the rare ones and take such interest in them. I assume it is. Like baseball cards, comic books and obviously vinyl, I have that same excitement of tracking down hard to find pieces only to store them on a shelf. Regardless, I love the little bastards!

Dunny Series 5 was launched yesterday and once again, we are on the hunt for the complete series and the ultimate catch of "the chase figure". This series showcases some amazing work from such artists as Mishka, MAD, Toofly, Kozik and one of the chases by a personal favorite, Huck Gee.

You most likely won't see me for the next couple weeks as I will be on a mission to complete the set....... ;-)

More Banksy In New Orleans

[This piece courtesy of Wooster Collective and Hypebeast]

Banksy has made a living ruling the streets of England with his provocative, political and damn good masterful execution of stencil graffiti. With his pieces collecting ridiculous amounts of money, any city should be honored to get tagged up but the legend, well at least everyone except the authorities. Recently taking a visit to New Orleans, Banksy attacks yet another flurry of buildings with his trademark style, obviously referencing some of the latest political problems troubling our nation. Full images are available at Wooster Collective.

He has always been a role model to me as a DJ and I used to listen to him when he first started Revolutions on WERS. Thanks Mike!

My Bachelor Party: Chemical Bromance!

I have been holding back from posting this review of my bachelor party from this past weekend, simply because............well, I have been trying to let it soak in. Or clear out of my system, depending on how you look at it.

I first must say before I go any further, I am so grateful to have such a great group of friends. For those who were unable to make it, I completely understand. To Todd, Chris, Damian, Mike and Nullspace...... I will never forget last weekend. I am not sure if you remembered me saying while we were canoeing "I just pissed myself", well.... I really did! I have NEVER laughed so much in my life.

Let's get this review started. So Friday night we headed up to the take on a canoe trip with the boys on the Saco River. We left the city at 6:30pm and headed up to our destination for the weekend, the Saco River Motor Lodge, where we looked forward to settling into out 3 bedroom suite for the evening.

First stop was the NH liquor store. Ohhhhhhhh lord, it's begun!

Yes, you do see a bottle of Dr. Mcgillicuddy's. That was in memory of when MO7S and I first met at a house party many years ago. moving on....

As you can see, Friday night was basically complete and absolute drunkeness. We made our way downtown (if that's what we call it) North Conway and decided to have some drinks with the natives. What a jolly ol' time that was!

The next morning we were all so hungover, this is what it looked like until the coffee and breakfast arrived. Looks like a table of shame....... lol

Saturday arrived, the beers were cracked, the canoes were launched, sandwiches for lunch were packed and we were ready for a beautiful day of sunshine and relaxation! Yes!!! Finally!!! We paddled on down the river and enjoyed our time on the river. We were 30 minutes into our 12 mile canoe trip and all of a sudden.................. the sky went black! LOL.

It was a wall of rain and full on thunderstorms until the second we left the water that day. Even with the weather, I swear............... I have never laughed so much.

I must also mention that on Saturday night before the drinking began. Todd MacLeod beat and became the official "Most Taco's To Be Eaten In One Sitting" in some dodgey Mexican restaurant in NH. He killed 10 of the most disgusting tacos known to mankind. I am almost positive that restaurant may have also drained all of the public water out of North Conway that evening.

Obviously, I won't release full details of my bachelor party. You can check out of our PHOTOS HERE. I will however, leave you with some of the best quotes of the weekend:

"I can't feel my face"
"CAN I HAVE A SHOT OF YOUR STRONGEST RUM WITH A GLASS OF COKE"
"I think it's letting up"
"Here is how it works: one plate raises up and the other one slides under it and BAM! Tektonic Bootie"
"Are you guys in a band?"
"Could I have your sharpest knife"
"Do you think even one Mexican works in this place?"
"Do you like me new watch?"
"So what's there to do for fun here?"

[Mix] MELEE & MO7S “Live @ ReLoad” 4 Decks!

Head over to the Monism Music blog to check out the newest set from MO7S and I, recorded from our show in Costa Mesa, California on July 19th! MONISM MUSIC BLOG IS HERE!

Red Bull Cola is going to blow your minds

[This piece created and written by: Vicki of Basstown]

A can of Red Bull Cola contains:Water, Sugar, Carbon Dioxide, Caramel Sugar Syrup, Natural Flavors from Plant Extracts: Galangal, Vanilla, Mustard Seed, Lime, Kola Nut, Cacao, Licorice, Cinnamon, Lemon, Ginger, Coca leaf, Orange, Corn Mint, Pine, Cardamom, Mace, CloveCaffeine from Coffee Beans and Natural Lemon Juice concentrate

Last night, I met with our friends at Red Bull for a special brainstorm session. We're cooking up big things in the coming months, and while I was there, I had the privilege (and this word choice is no overstatement) of their Red Bull Cola, which reached our shores via Las Vegas in June, and will continue to spread throughout the country. It is the most delicious cola I've ever had.

It tastes nothing like Red Bull as we know it, and I can't wait to drink it daily by the case.Mmm, ok, not that much, but it's most prominent flavor is definitely the clove, and I assure you'll be blown away. And finally...a Red Bull beverage that will be excellent for whiskey lovers.

Thank you Vicki!

Dylan Rhymes - Interview - The Day Has Arrived!

Dance music has been the biggest part of Dylan Rhymes' (otherwise known as Marvin Beaver - and yes, he's heard all of the jokes) life from a young age. Inspired by early hip-hop and electro a la Kraftwerk and Doug E. Fresh, Marvin purchased his first set of decks at 15 and caught the bug in a bad way.

While working for British Airways after leaving school, a chance meeting with a nu-beat-writing co-worker who was selling his equipment to go traveling led to Marvin's first "studio". Supplemented with the now legendary Roland TR808 and TR909 drum machines Beaver started, as most people did in dance music in the late eighties, by putting out a few acid house white labels. Before long the talent was noticed by owners of the seminal Wax Factory imprint, Ron Wells and Chris Simmons, who began to release more of his material. Dave Pearce's Reachin Records also bought into the young producer's skills, fuelling the fire and enabling Beaver to set up a commercial studio with his mate Justin Drake in the early 1990s.

Leaving Peace Division to focus on his own material, Beaver invented the Dylan Rhymes moniker (a reference to Bob Dylan) and set about working on a breakbeat track for Junior Boys Own. The result was 1996s "Naked & Ashamed" which, due to a Smirnoff ad campaign, became one the label's biggest tracks (no mean feat considering JBO's pedigree). Since then he has cemented his reputation as one of the leaders of the electro, breakbeat and tech house scenes, through his output on Kingsize Records, Meat Katie's Whole9Yards and Lot49 labels and his own Blue Black imprint.

Besides original work, Beaver has also remixed the likes of Deep Dish, Infusion, Dave Gahan, Overseer, Unkle and Puretone while he has collaborated with Meat Katie, Christian J, Force Mass Motion (as Silencer) and Anthony J Gorry (on his 2004 album, Dead Famous).

On August 22nd, Dylan Rhymes will be touching down in the Northeast area finally after years of attempts at pulling a show together. His two Northeast shows consist of August 21st in Vermont at Club Metronome and August 22nd in Boston at Club Rise.

Marvin was nice enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for us. You can also find a new mix from DJ Kares who will be opening for Dylan Rhymes in Boston, along with a mix from December that was compiled from DR. Enjoy!

[Melee] What is your name and what do you do?

[DR] My name is Marvin Beaver and I'm a record producer + DJ

[Melee] How long has DYLAN RHYMES been producing/djing?

[DR] I have been producing dance music since 1989 but have only been using the Dylan Rhymes moniker since 1996.

[Melee] What do you use in the studio? Do you rely on software or more on hardware to get the sounds you want?

[DR] I am pretty much software based but I use a mic pre to record certain sounds + vocals through to give it a lil bit of analog warmth

[Melee] Do you have any sort of vintage or strange equipment to make your sound?

[DR] Not any more - My studio environment revolves around a Mac and some speakers. The strangeness just comes naturally ;)

[Melee] Where have you toured in the world? And what place stands out from the rest as being the best gig to date?

[DR] I have pretty much been to all continents but I guess one of the best gigs has to be Burning Man which I played at for the first time last year. Unbelievablevibe there. Nothing quite like it anywhere else. People told me how amazing it was but I reserved my judgement and I was completely blown away!

[Melee] I know that you had your first experience at Burning Man recently and your planning on heading out to the Playa again this year. Tell me about your thoughts stepping onto the Playa for the first time?

[DR] I was very anxious after hearing so many amazing stories that it wouldn't live up to my expectations but I was so very wrong. It is a wonderful place. Its so isolated and the terrain is unlike anywhere else that it has a very mystical feel about it. The people were so cool and the events and art were incredible. Most definitely a high point of my life.

[Melee] Can you please explain to the public in your opinion the definition of "techfunk", and over the years have your sounds changed or stayed the same, and how?

[DR] To me Techfunk is a term which covers a whole load of genres which lets you be eclectic in your choice of music you produce or play. I like many different styles and my productions over the years have supported this but they have a constant which binds them together and that is the simplest way to describe it. I like to think I have progressed over the years but I am constantly pursuing the perfect mix. Never being 100% happy with your work makes you strive to do better.

[Melee] What are your thoughts on emergence and prevalence of digital formats in club music? Where do you see digital media ending up in the next few years?

[DR] I am 100% supporter of the digital age in club music. It is there for people to use and it is instant. Perfect!!! I see digital media ending up being almost 100% of all sales as Vinyl + Cd will become collectors only formats. All clubs will harbor equipment that will allow the dj/performer to bring only their hard drive and plug and play. This will be the not too distant future in my mind.

[Melee] What can people expect to see and hear when they attend an DYLAN RHYMES gig?

[DR] I think they get a chance to hear music from different genres with a bit of attitude and they get to see a dj who appreciates his job and is enjoying the music he is producing and playing.

[Melee] Who are your influences at the current moment?

[DR] I really like Martin Eyerer's stuff. Big fan of his + I am into a lot of the Popof productions. Both quite minimal for what I usually play but these guys are doing it with more balls.

[Melee] What other forms of music do you enjoy when you're not focusing on your production?

[DR] I never really listen to dance music when chilling so I tend to reach for stuff like Air or Depeche Mode. Good songs with great production. Lot to learn from listening to great songs

[Melee] Any advice to bedroom djs/producers?

[DR] This is your time. You are in the same place as me with a laptop and the internet. Get producing and get your music out there. The world is a tiny place and you can be anywhere in moments.

[Melee] What can people expect from DYLAN RHYMES in the years to come?

[DR] I'm going to strive for better productions and keep up with the scene as long as people like what I do then expect more tunes

[Melee] Would you like to share any final thoughts with the readers?

[DR] Thanks for taking an interest and hope to be in a club near you soon ;)
